EA Announces Sims Stories

Sim meets girl, Sim loses girl, Sim goes to the potty. That's the general
plot behind a new directed line of Sims games coming from Electronic Arts.
These new games are designed to be played in smaller time increments and
follow a general script - and they'll run well on an average laptop
computer.
Check our story out for details on shipping, and the new Sims titles -
including one that sounds like a Sims version of Nintendogs.

How Skype's New Project Actually Works

It's called Joost, and it aims to upend the world of broadcast television.
Developed by the founders of Skype and Kazaa, it might actually succeed! We
spent some time with the CEO today, and got some good insight on how the
service works, who might use it, and how they'll work with content
providers. It's not user-generated content, but the folks at companies like
Brightcove should be concerned. Our interview, and more details, can be
found here.

How I Turned My Treo into an iPhone

I've been wondering how long it would take for someone to borrow Apple's
iPhone interface and graft it onto an existing phone.
Less than a week, it turns out. Some clever folks in Australia have created
a new skin for the Treo 650 that looks just like Apple's iPhone, which isn't
due until June. It really works too!
I modded my Treo in minutes. Apple, alas, was not amused - it's suing to
have the mod removed from the Web. Check out my new Treo - it looks
fantastic - and read all about this clever hack.
Good luck finding it! Oh, and Lance Ulanoff is marveling about Apple's
marketing. You can read about that here.

Microsoft Fights Back, Claims Vista is Secure

Microsoft claims that it has closed many of the big loopholes that let
malware writers ride roughshod over Windows. And there are some nice new

The Unseen Leak: Faxes in the Era of Sarbanes-Oxley

Since the advent of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX), publicly traded
companies have spent considerable time, effort, and expense to develop and
implement new and tighter processes, documentation and reporting
infrastructures.
This white paper examines the issues surrounding faxing in a SOX context,
and how companies can use Internet faxing technologies to plug a leak they
may not even realize they have.

First Combo High-Def DVD Player Announced

Oh man, is CES going to be good! Lots of disruptive products out there, and
I'm particularly excited about a new one from LG. The company promises to
show off the first combo/hybrid drive for Blu-ray and HD DVD, possibly
putting an end to the whole war for good. That's good news for consumers,
who have mostly ignored the new discs. Our story wraps up what we know about
LG's CES announcements, and also provides analysis as to what it means, and
why this is so cool. Check it out, and stay tuned to our CES coverage all
next week at www.pcmag.com/ces for all the breakthroughs.

calling features. This is particularly interesting, because the big cell

which makes no sense to me. Our storyhas all the details on this nifty new

The Worst Products of the Year

This is my very own addition to the end of year 2006 navel-gazing.
But mine is based on cold hard numbers: the ratings our reviewers give out
on every product they touch. Eight products last year were so bad they
received our lowest score. They range from an unusable cell phone to a
camera so useless they should pay you to use it. Why read the story? Well,
it'll give you good advice about what to avoid, but it's also like watching
a car crash in slow motion. For some reason we all just love failure. The
story has the details.

Gateway Delivers Sharp, Colorful Monitor

24-inch widescreen monitors are one of the real desktop sweet spots these
days. They offer great resolution and have enough pixel space for even
demanding users. We just took a deep look at a new 24-inch from Gateway and
came away very impressed. It's ideal for your computer and works well with
HDTV video, too. It's also well priced, at under $700. Find out why we liked
it so much, in the review.

Rating the Movie Download Services

Have those movie download services finally come of age? There are five of
them right now that promise to replace your DVD and Netflix with their
ability to deliver new and old movies downloaded and watched on your PC.
But how good are they? We put the five services to the test, to compare them
and see which one would come out on top. Read our story for the verdict, but
you could certainly find some good quality movies through these services, at
some pretty decent prices too.

Top 20 Most-Wired Colleges

How well have my alma maters, NYU and UVM, kept up with the Joneses when it
comes to technology? Not so well, as it turns out. How did I find out? We
just completed a survey of more than 200 colleges to find the top 20
most-wired colleges in the U.S. We rated them on everything from computer
labs in the dorms to the percent of faculty that put course materials
online.
Alas, my schools did not fare so well in either category, compared with MIT
and Indiana University. How did your school do? Check out our story on the
top 20, and our nifty comparison feature that lets you see how your college
stacks up against the best. It's also a great tool for picking the right
school to attend. You can find it all here.

Welcome to this special CES wrap up version of What's New Now, with a little
bit of other stuff thrown in at the end.

Yesterday, CES 2007 came to a close. Over the past five days, I've gotten a
good look at where technology is going this year, both at home and at work.
This year's show was different than last year's; in 2006 it was all about
the flat screen and the race to be bigger. This show was much more about
connectivity and networking, as if the vendors assumed we already had our
big (and small screens), and now it was time to put them to work. Wires and
pliers, DRM and distribution are far less evocative than garage-sized LCD
TVs, but that's where we are as an industry. Thus media sharing, wireless
USB, and even the Apple iPhone are all about sharing and viewing what you
have. Oh, and we've also entered a 1080p world. If you're not 1080p, you are
certainly behind the times. For all the details on CES, check out our
special report at www.pcmag.com/ces, where we've put all our stories into
one easy to navigate site. Below are some of the highlights, what I think
some of the most important stories were, and some of our show wrap-ups.

Hands on with Apple's iPhone

One of the biggest CE stories this week came from Apple, at its San
Francisco MacWorld show. Although the iPhone is wildly overpriced and lacks
the physical buttons that U.S.
users have come to expect, the software looks to change the phone experience
just as the Mac changed the PC. We got our hands on the iPhone for a quick
preview, and you can read all about it here. It's certainly an interesting
and breakthrough product. Will Apple sell a lot of them?
That remains to be seen.

Cisco and Apple Battle Over iPhone Name

Apple's calling its new phone the iPhone. Cisco owns the iPhone trademark
and released a line of VoIP-based iPhones at CES. But oddly, Apple and Cisco
can't agree on licensing the name. What's the confusion about? And is this a
tempest in a teapot? Our story has the details. And what does Nokia think
about the iPhone? We've got an update on that too.

CES Phone Wrap-Up

There were tons of other phones on display at CES: new devices from Samsung,
Nokia, Motorola and others. It looks as if real broadcast TV is about to
come to your phone, as new services launched. And the new DECT wireless
home-phone standard was embraced and extended by everyone from Linksys to
VTech. Our phone wrap-up puts it in perspective and shows what this year
will be like with our favorite portable gadgets.
