developerWorks Weekly Edition

16 August 2007

Dear developer,

Jack Herrington digs his new Apple iPhone. With built-in WiFi, a great Internet browser, and iPod functionality at his fingertips, he wonders why he waited four whole days after its release to buy one. Now, when he goes for coffee, the phone logs into the coffee shop's password-protected WiFi and buzzes gently if he gets new e-mail on one of his three accounts. Pretty sweet.

Like many of you, Jack also digs tinkering -- and in this week's feature article, he shows you how to develop a custom app for the iPhone using existing Web tools like PHP and XML. This enables him to use the device to control his Macintosh remotely. Take a look -- and be sure to check out all of the other great new resources on developerWorks this week, in the listings below.

I don't have an iPhone, but maybe it's time I made the leap. I've been muddling along with a basic pay-as-you-go model for years. However, the latter does have its advantages:

  1. It's cheap (much to my delight).
  2. I've now mastered the art of keeping conversations brief (much to the delight of my family and friends).

Until next week,
John Swanson

    Hi:

uh .. no .. I went though the readmes and the complex manul ainstall seems too tricky and difficult to attempt and runs the risk of clobbering the 4705.

Is there any chance of a more automated install procedure? with a restore?

***Commentary: The iPhone Is Not a Smart Phone
by Paul Thurrott, News Editor, thurrott@windowsitpro.com

I've been testing Apple's hype-tacular iPhone since the company released it
to the public in a media orgy on June 29. And although some of what the
iPhone does is truly fantastic, none of the demo-friendly technology Apple
employed in the device is particularly compelling for business users. In
fact, I'd go so far as to say that the iPhone isn't a smart phone at all, at
least not in the conventional sense. Instead, you might think of it as the
cell phone equivalent of the Media Center PC you might put in your den.
Sure, it's superficially similar to the PCs you use for work. But you really
just use the Media Center PC, like the iPhone, for fun, and not for work. If
that's not obvious to you, please read on, at the following URL:

in a cable-friendly, compact 'zero-footprint' package making it ideal for
space and operating constrained environments or widely distributed areas
such as test labs, campuses an multi-floored facilities. Spider provides
secure, real-time control of the remote server, including full
administrative privileges, operating system, and non-blocking BIOS access
regardless of your location. Amazing scalable, Spider can also be
daisy-chained using Lantronix SwitchPort+(TM) integrated Ethernet switch
technology providing additional cost savings and flexibility.

Networking Perspectives: Getting your iPhone to Sync with Exchange 2003
    by Alan Sugano, asugano@adscon.com

A few weeks ago, a client asked me whether the Apple iPhone would work with
Microsoft Exchange Server because the client wanted to purchase one when
they were released. I suggested that he wait a few months until Apple worked
out the bugs. As you know, the iPhone doesn't work with ActiveSync, however
it does support IMAP. The client ended up purchasing an iPhone, and I was
tasked with getting it to sync with Exchange. Ideally, you should use Secure
IMAP/IMAP with SSL so your user name and password aren't sent in clear text
across the Internet. Visit the following URL to learn about setting up
Secure IMAP with Exchange Server 2003.
