IPHONE OUTMATCHED BY SEVERAL DEVICES IN ITS CLASS

Best of the blogs: Even though the iPhone has been, albeit not easily,
unshackled from AT&T Wireless Service, Tom Yager says it's still a waste of
money. "Following an exhaustive comparison of alternatives, I have
overwhelming backing for my early conclusion that iPhone is vastly
outmatched by several devices in its price class," he writes in this
Enterprise Mac post. Yager's ultimate advice: Buy a real phone. From the
feature well: Phrases such as "your boss is watching" and "you are your own
worst enemy" naturally invoke those internal fear-raddled voices in most of
us. "There are plenty of reasons... ...

HACK MY IPHONE, PLEASE

Notes from the field: After spending his last summer before college
sculpting the iPhone to be free of an AT&T Wireless contract, George Hotz
bartered the thing for a car worth approximately $50,000, and three more
iPhones, which he plans to unlock as well, Cringe reports in Hack my iPhone,
please. Hotz is not alone, either, as UniquePhone and iPhoneSimFree.com both
also boast of modifying the device's SIM card.
"The difference is that while Apple wisely has left the Jersey Kid alone
(are you paying attention, RIAA?), it's less sanguine about the software
hacks." Related: Legal worries delay release of... ...

HACK MY IPHONE - PLEASE

Most high school kids spend their last summer before college bumming around
Europe, chillin' at the beach, or hangin' with their homies. Not George
Hotz. The 17 year old from New Jersey spent his summer with a soldering
iron, an iPhone, and a case of Red Bull. The result? A wide open iPhone
unshackled from the bonds of an AT&T Wireless contract.
(You'll find all the sordid details on his blog.) Even better for Hotz:
After eBay scotched his plans to auction the phone he traded it for a
$50,000 sports car and three more 8GB iPhones, which he plans... ...

GEEK WEEK IN REVIEW

Got week? We got news. Here are some of the weirder items to cross my desk
of late. Bust a cap in your access. ISPs across the nation experienced an
Internet slowdown last Sunday due to problems with Level
3 Communications' fiber backbone outside of Cleveland. The cause? Not
Redmond, Russian hackers, or rabid squirrels; the cable was riddled with
bullet holes. Get the feeling Level 3 was late with its loan payments?
MySpook. It seems even the spy community is going Web 2.0. According to a
report in London's Financial Times, US intelligence agencies are plotting to

AOL GOES AWOL

AOL - or at least the Webmail portion of the service - appears to have
pulled a Skype. According to postings on AOL's webmail messageboards, the
service has been inaccessible for roughly 24 hours, with no explanation
forthcoming as to why. Untold numbers of AOL sufferers are encountering the
mysterious error code C0FE1800 when they try to log in to their accounts.

HP SUPPORT: CROSS-EYED AND BRAINLESS

I have to admit, Hewlett Packard has kind of fallen off my radar lately.
It hasn't had a spy scandal in months. (Though it is getting sued by four of
the reporters who got snooped on.) It continues to sell PCs at a feverish
pace, while Dell sinks further into the muck of its creative accounting
practices. Well, HP landed on my radar yesterday with a vengeance when my
power went out during a freak storm, taking my computer (and my column) with
it. You might ask, why isn't my machine plugged into a uninterruptible power
supply? In fact, it... ...

SKYPE: YOU GOT SOME 'SPLAININ TO DO

When Skype went AWOL for 48 hours last week, it came back smelling of cheap
perfume and rotgut gin. Some 220 million users waited in their doorways
wearing curlers and holding rolling pins, demanding to know where Skype had
been. Naturally, Skype had a good excuse at the ready.
They blamed Microsoft. A security update that rebooted millions of computers
at the same time revealed a heretofore unknown weakness in Skype's
peer-to-peer VoIP network. At least, that's Skype's story and they're
sticking to it. Normally this is a good strategy. If something catastrophic
happens to you, it's always a good... ...

CORPORATE CARTELS GONE WILD

Maybe it's from listening to all that rap music. But if any organization has
acted like original gangstas, it's the RIAA. And now, it seems, someone's
about to bust a cap in their assets. Last week Tanya Andersen filed a class
action suit in Oregon accusing the RIAA, the Big 4 record companies, and
digital snoops Media Sentry of a range of criminal racketeering charges not
seen since the John Gotti trial. (For those of you not closely following the
whole RIAA saga, Tanya is the disabled mother of 10-year-old Kylee, whom the
RIAA deposed as part of its unsuccessful... ...

CLOSED IPHONE OPENS ROAD FOR LINUX PHONES

By Tom Yager

Posted August 22, 4:00 a.m. Pacific Time

With iPhone a closed platform, Linux gets an wide-open road for phones and
other smart devices Linux developers have been dying for a phone of their
own ever since Sharp killed the Zaurus Linux-based PDA. Apple's decision to
close iPhone to 3rd-party applications gave the green light to Linux phones
and mobile devices. LinuxWorld Expo 2007 basked in Apple's unwitting
generosity, with one booth after another featuring fledgling mobile Linux
projects prospecting for funding, direction, and developers. The whole
exhibit floor had the feel of a mining town that was just getting its
footing. Linux on mobile devices is nothing new; success would be. It would
take a phone handset maker the size of Motorola to make mobile Linux a hit,
and as it happens, Motorola has staked a claim. Motorola's been fiddling
with Linux for some time, promising to open the Linux-based phone OS that it
uses on a couple of shipping models, but, like many other exhibitors in the
mobile Linux realm, Motorola can't decide where to draw the line between
protected intellectual property and The Public Good. As a result, in
Motorola's booth as at its developer site, Motorola teases a couple of Linux
phones in its...

developerWorks Weekly Edition

16 August 2007

Dear developer,

Jack Herrington digs his new Apple iPhone. With built-in WiFi, a great Internet browser, and iPod functionality at his fingertips, he wonders why he waited four whole days after its release to buy one. Now, when he goes for coffee, the phone logs into the coffee shop's password-protected WiFi and buzzes gently if he gets new e-mail on one of his three accounts. Pretty sweet.

Like many of you, Jack also digs tinkering -- and in this week's feature article, he shows you how to develop a custom app for the iPhone using existing Web tools like PHP and XML. This enables him to use the device to control his Macintosh remotely. Take a look -- and be sure to check out all of the other great new resources on developerWorks this week, in the listings below.

I don't have an iPhone, but maybe it's time I made the leap. I've been muddling along with a basic pay-as-you-go model for years. However, the latter does have its advantages:

  1. It's cheap (much to my delight).
  2. I've now mastered the art of keeping conversations brief (much to the delight of my family and friends).

Until next week,
John Swanson
