CRITICAL DATA PROTECTION QUESTIONS FOR IT DECISION-MAKERS

In this Webcast, Doug Chandler of IDC will explain how many companies have
evaluated their data protection choices in today's market and made a
successful transition from in-house backup and recovery operations to
service-based solutions. Sponsored by Arsenal.

CALCULATING THE COST OF AN IPHONE

Wireless: Now that they will be officially available this evening, albeit
likely hard to find, Apple's iPhone brings the reality of a two-year
contract replete with beefy monthly payments. Tom Yager does the math in
this Ahead of the Curve post. "What's the absolute minimum cost of iPhone?
Add it all up and it comes out to $2,034.75." That number does not include
taxes, fees and surcharges which -- as anyone with a telephone can tell you
-- account for a healthy portion of one's monthly bill. "That's the cost of
a $499 iPhone, a two-year AT&T contract at $59.99... ...

TALENT WAR AND H-1B MAKE SMOKESCREEN

Careers: "The problem isn't talent -- there is a lot around," explains Nick
Corcodilos. "The problem, I think, is management." Companies are so focused
on stock price and PR that they define jobs so narrowly they can't find the
perfect candidate. "The focus is on filling jobs rather than building bench
strength. So companies wage a talent war, lawyers handle the recruiting, the
whole thing is revealed to be a sham, and HR is left holding the H-1B bag."

FW: Russia's shiny tower, iPhone gets YouTube & more

Diamond-Shaped Tower to Be Jewel of Siberia

High on a hill beside a neighboring city, a tower rises above the dense woods, its apex resembling a finely cut diamond. Sunlight reflects off it such that the tower glistens in the sky, twinkling like a jewel and commanding attention 24/7. At least that's the vision of the architects at Foster+Partners, who are proposing just such a structure next to the city of Khanty Mansiysk in Sibera.

In a few very impressive renderings, the Foster gang shows the jewel-like tower dominating the landscape with its shine in an almost biblical way. That's due to "solar gain" — an architectural design that reflects and refracts sunlight, and keeps the interior lit with natural light.

All in all, we love the wicked, environmentally friendly design, even if the real thing probably won't look as good as the renderings. Check out a couple more images, including one of the interior, by following the link below. — Peter Pachal

IPHONE: APPLE ANSWERS ALL THE BIG QUESTIONS

By Tom Yager

Posted June 27, 4:00 a.m. Pacific Time

Yes, it'll cost you, and yes, Apple wants your SSN in iTunes. But you'll
want one anyway Whatever plans I might have had for this week were put on
hold by Apple's full opening of iPhone's kimono prior to the June 29 launch.
I knew that Apple would hold back as much detail as it could until the last
possible minute, but now that crates and crates of iPhones are sitting in
the back rooms of AT&T Stores in strip malls across North America, and store
staffs have been issued their riot gear and marching orders, it'd be silly
to try to keep anything about iPhone under wraps. Apple has answered most of
the non-feature-related iPhone questions that I'd have asked on my readers'
behalf, but several remain open. I'll give you a taste of the answered and
unanswered questions here. The details that deadlines force me to leave out
of this column will be in my Enterprise Mac blog. The grand detail will be
in my InfoWorld Test Center review of iPhone, which will get underway as
soon as Apple supplies an evaluation unit. That brings me to my first
still-unresolved question: When will iPhone review units be sent...

FIVE TECHNOLOGIES MORE PRESSING THAN THE IPHONE

I'll never get it. Of any industry, save perhaps the stock market, you'd
think the tech market would have become inured to hype. Yet every souped-up
calculator that comes along seems to create ripples far in excess of its
true weight in the universe. This week, it's the iPhone.
Hey, I bought a MacBook Pro, so I'm certainly not immune to Apple's
marketing (though I do blame the lucidity lapse on Parallels and Paul
"Sasquatch" Venezia's overbearing Orchard fetish), but from an IT manager's
perspective, you can sum up the iPhone in two words: Who cares?

JaxView Addds Agentless SOA Management
Attaining Visibility with No Network Overhead
by SOA World News Desk
(June 21, 2007) - Generally, in order to enable performance reporting, fault management, usage metering and SLA management in their SOA environments, companies had to either install agents on the application servers or deploy intermediaries as proxies. The agents become part of the handler chain in J2EE environments or .NET Extensions in .NET environments in order to access the message flow between the service consumers and providers. Where the management tool is deployed as an intermediary or a gateway, messages between clients and providers are brokered by the intermediary.

by SOA World News Desk
(June 21, 2007) - Last week I had a meeting with a serial entrepreneur who's working on a new company whose product is a calendar for social networks, or a social network of calendars, depending on which thread you pick up. It's basically a good idea, a no-brainer, because time and networking relate to each other. I have relationships with individuals, or any group of people I choose to meet with. Of course systems can work better if there's a way to express those relationships.
