AMD Suffers Big Chip War Casualty

What a loss! After 14 straight quarters of gains against Intel, the upstart
chip company seems to be backsliding. The solution? What every bloated
organization does when faced with structural problems: reorganize! We've got
chapter and verse on what's coming up, including layoffs, a streamlined
sales and marketing organization, and more. If you work at AMD, you'd better
be looking over your shoulder, not to mention watching your back!

Intel Goes for the Jugular

Meanwhile, Intel, which is back in the catbird seat after more than three
years, is going for AMD's throat. Its latest round of price cuts makes the
Core 2 Duo even more attractive. I'm personally offended by the company,
considering that I purchased a CPU for $350 a few weeks ago (to build this
system), and now that CPU costs just $250.
And that wasn't even the biggest price drop. Now's the time to buy a new
CPU, and maybe even build a new system! Our story has details on the pricing
cuts, and more.

Best Buy Makes Big HD Radio Bet

HD Radio is coming on strong. That's the conclusion, at
least, of the top guys at Best Buy. The company has made a
huge bet, rolling HD Radio hardware out into stores
nationwide. It's a crowded market for digital audio, and
getting worse. But I wonder if the HD Radio push has
anything to do with the recent trebling of royalties on
Internet radio? Or am I just seeing specters? Read our
story and decide for yourself. Oh, and if you're wondering
what HD Radio really is, check out our recent piece
describing the technology and what makes it work.

TicketMaster Sues StubHub

I'm a huge fan of StubHub, and not only because the
company's offices are next to ours in San Francisco. Nope,
StubHub offers a really fine service at pretty good prices.
I'm a huge detractor of TicketMaster (aka TicketBstrd)
because of the outrageous and usurious fees they've
extorted from concertgoers for years and years. And
TicketMaster continues to show its true stripes by going
after StubHub in court. Now, I can't vouch for the veracity
of the suit, but given the reputations of the two companies,
it's obvious to me which is in the right, and which is filing
a spurious suit. Every business has a right to a profit. No
business should abuse its monopoly as cavalierly as
TicketMaster. You can read more about it in our story.

Eight Surprising Lessons from Web 2.0 Expo

them may be familiar to you, but I'll bet at least a few of
them will be new. I put the eight new things I uncovered into a

between a Mash Up and Stone Soup? It's in there!

Virtual BlackBerry Coming to Windows

Got one of those fancy Windows Smartphones, but really wish you
could have Blackberry services on it? Well, soon you'll be able
to. RIM is working on a "virtual Blackberry" service that will
work right on that Windows Mobile device. However, it won't be
all peaches and cream. You'll have two calendars, two address
books, and two possibly cranky and incompatible synchronization
programs. Worth the pain? Read our story to find out. Oh, and
if you're wondering why the Blackberry service went out last
week, RIM finally admitted the problem and blamed it on some
sort of faulty new feature. Really gives you confidence about
the new virtual Blackberry service, eh?

Nokia Remains on Top of a Slowing Phone Market

Who's number one in worldwide phones? Still Nokia, although the
torrid growth of the industry is beginning to slow. Nokia
shipped more than twice as many phones as number two but,
interestingly, has been having trouble in the U.S. market.
There's good news in the sales reports for Samsung and
Sony/Ericsson: Both had much to cheer about. Find out why being
on top isn't necessarily still the best news for Nokia-and what
else is going on in the phone world-all in our story.

Dvorak Thinks the iPhone Will Be a Flop

He used to love the idea of a pocket-sized, all-in-one device.
But now that it's almost a reality, chief crank John C. Dvorak
has soured on the idea. Why? You'll have to read his rant for all
the details, but it's because he's disgusted by phone fashion-and
also knows that these things will never really work right. If
John's down on an Apple product, you know a flame war will begin
soon!

Black Box Tattles on New Jersey Governor (and You, Too)

Oh no, he wasn't speeding, said the State Police shortly after New
Jersey governor Corzine's car suffered a horrendous accident. But
the black box inside that late-model SUV told the truth: The car
was going 91 miles an hour at the time of the crash. You may not
know it, but that same technology most likely sits inside your car,
too, waiting to tattle on your own driving habits. Our story has
the details, and what you can do. Forget Jesus on Board, we're all

SMOOTHING WATERS FOR THE IPHONE

Notes from the field: The excitable Robert X. Cringely explains that
"everybody gets something out of the Apple EMI deal." Indeed, the pact under
which EMI drops DRM via iTunes. That's everybody as in the record company
and Apple. "Don't be fooled," Cringe writes in DRM a little DRM of me (

). "This isn't about freeing up iPod owners."

Podcasts: This latest episode of InfoWorld Live focuses on the future of
cell phones and the timely topic of whether, or not, newspapers are dead.
"No," is the answer. Onto mobiles. "Not everyone is going to have a
smartphone tomorrow," says Stephane Marceau, CEO of MobiVOX. "Even

), April 2, thereby demonstrating, in one lawyer's words, that "demand is
